2023 Financial Aid e-application process – how to apply

Please review the instructions below and take careful note of the documents you will need to prepare to support your application.

Application dates

Applications for SU 2023 funding open 1 July and now close 30 November.

Application process

There is a new online process that will direct you from your my.sun account to a secure site to complete your e-application.

You have one opportunity to apply for SU funding, so it’s important all your required support documentation (max. 2MB per file) is completed and ready to upload.

The form will take you approximately 20 minutes to complete.

After submitting your application, you will receive an email within fourteen (14) days to let you know to let you know whether your application has been is complete, or if you need to resubmit. Should you need to resubmit any supporting documentation, you will need to do so within seven (7) days.

All communication will be to your email address, so please remember to check this inbox on a regular basis.

SU external donor bursaries

There are seven (7) external donor bursaries that have a unique application form. Please take careful note of the different closing dates and forms that you need to complete and submit in your application.

Family bursaries

To apply for a family bursary listed below, you need to complete the unique application form, adding the name of the bursary in the first field on the form.

Please double-check you have attached all the required support documents, then email your application to sunfinaid@sun.ac.za, including your student number in the subject line, ‘SU# / Family Bursary application’. This form and support documentation are submitted via email and not via the my.sun portal.

We thus encourage all students who apply for a family bursary to also apply for SU funding via the new online process (see How to Apply point 3 ‘my.sun portal sign in’ below) to ensure you are registered on the CUBL financial aid database.

Application form

These are the information fields you will need to populate and/or upload relevant documentation for your application.

Please review the SAMPLE e-application form as a guide in preparing the support documents that you will need.

  • Declaration and Consent

You must be a South African citizen to be eligible for SU funding.

Both you and your parent/s or legal guardian/s will need to make a financial declaration (i.e., if under debt review, under administration, sequestrated, or declared unfit in terms of a court order) according to the National Credit Act no 34 of 2005.

You will also be required to give consent for all your information to be verified by a third party appointed by Stellenbosch University and by the South African Revenue Services (SARS) to disclose the taxpayer information they have on record.

  • List of application information and documentation

You will need the following information and documentation* ready to complete your application. We recommend you save them all in a clearly named folder – for example, CUBL 2023 finaid e-application – on your computer.

*All files must be in jpg, png or pdf format (max. 2MB** per file).

**Note on document file size
It is imperative that each document you upload must not be larger than 2MB. If your file is too big, then please compress it. Refer to smallpdf for assistance.

STUDENT PERSONAL INFORMATION

  • SU student number, ID number, cell phone number, email address
  • NSFAS reference number if you have applied to NSFAS or are a current NSFAS bursary holder
  • ID certified copy
  • Medical certificate or SASSA if you have a disability
  • CV one page summary that includes any leadership role, sport achievement, and other awards
  • Latest academic record if you are currently studying at another university

PARENT/S 1, 2 OR LEGAL GUARDIAN/S 1, 2 INFORMATION for each parent/legal guardian

  • ID number, cell phone number, email address
  • Death certificate if deceased
  • ID certified copy
  • Income description: Proof of income and monthly income before tax (salary slip / ITA34 / affidavit of informal income, including type – e.g., vegetable seller/domestic work), or unemployment (affidavit / retrenchment letter / UIF letter), or child support (maintenance agreement), or pension/SASSA (letter from bank / bank statement clearly showing monthly amount)

FAMILY INFORMATION

  • Proof of separation, or divorce (divorce decree*), or estrangement for marital status of parents/legal guardians and maintenance agreement if applicable
  • Proof of university registration for any siblings, up to three (3) siblings only

*only the one page, with Final Order of Divorce declaration/signatures

SPOUSE INFORMATION if you are a married/widowed student

  • Death certificate if deceased
  • ID number, cell phone number, email address
  • ID certified copy

*Only upload the unique external donor bursary application form; please do not re-upload any support documents requested previously. For example, if you uploaded your Parent 1 ID or proof of income under Parent/Legal Guardian Information, then do reupload these again, even if the unique external donor bursary form requests it: duplicate document uploads will result in a file size error and your application may then not be processed.

Please note that as at 30 Sep, all applications for these bursaries are closed: Doris Crossley Bursary, Du Toit Hugenote Bursary, Piet Neethling Educational Trust-Bursary, Sheila Brand Bursary, and Vlakte Bursary.

How to apply

1. RESEARCH BURSARY OPTIONS

Read through the Bursary Calendar. Take note of the different eligibility criteria.

2. DOCUMENTATION

Prepare and complete all the required support documentation relevant to your personal circumstance and save these in a clearly named folder on your computer. This should include any unique application form/s, reference and/or motivational letter/s, and/or affidavit/s as indicated for external donor bursaries where the application process is via the my.sun portal.

3. MY.SUN PORTAL SIGN IN

Sign in with your unique 8-digit SU student number and password.

Read the 2023 Financial Aid e-applications preamble and click ‘Apply’. This will take you to the e-application form.

Follow the instructions and make sure you upload the correct documentation when prompted.
It will take you approximately 20 minutes to complete.

Remember you only have one opportunity to complete this application.
There is no option to save your application and return to it later once you have clicked ‘Submit’.
